Vietnam War

The Vietnam war took place from 1946 to 1975. The main countries involved in the Vietnam War were South Vietnam and North Vietnam. South Vietnam was backed by anti-communist countries which included the United States, South Korea, Australia and the Philippines. North Vietnam was backed by communist forces which included the People’s Republic of China, the Soviet Union and North Korea.

1946:
France tries to regain control of Vietnam.

1954:The Vietminh defeats the French. Vietnam is divided into two zones: the Communist
ruled north and a republic in the south.

1959:Communists supported by North Vietnam cause conflict in South Vietnam.
between the two halves of Vietnam marks the beginning of the Vietnam War.

1965: In order to stop the spread of communism, the United States sends troops to Vietnam. 60,000 Americans are killed, including Vietnamese.

1973: U.S. signs peace accord with North Vietnam

1975: South Vietnam surrenders to communist North

1976: North and South Vietnam united

It was ignorant of the United States to be apart of this war in my opinion. The spread of communism was not prevented, and that was their main goal. This war caused nothing but deaths. I believe that the U.S. should remain independent, unless a future matter affects us.

  1. Are you only saying the United States should not have interfered because the south had to surrender to the north? What would you have said if the north surrender to the south what would your opinion be if was switched around?

  2. I would have to agree with Blaise. The Vietnam war was a huge waste of time, money, and lives. It caused too many problems back in the United States, and we lost anyway. It was not a smart move to get involved in a war that was not our own. It makes sense that if we had won it may have been worth it to fight the spread of communism, but as we can see now the domino effect did not play its part because Vietnam did fall to communism but it does not affect that many other places.

  3. Yes, but what about the Rwanda Civil War ? the Tutsi and the Hutu needed the United States. when we left not only did it go south, but more and more people died. so I ask what do you think it takes in order for the United States to come in and intervene? when half of a groups population is taken out? or when people are crying for help? or when the Rwanda Civil War effect other places?

    1. although this sounds terrible, I believe that it was for the best that the U.S stayed out of Rwanda. If we would have tried to prevent the genocide it could have lead to an even greater war- similar to that of WWI.

  4. In my opinion I don't ever think that American should have ever gone into Vietnam in the first place. Just like many wars, America is always throwing themselves into situations that they should not be in. We always have to prove our dominance and sometimes it backfires. Like this case, America went into Vietnam to stop communism and they failed miserably with 60,000 deaths. Next time America should sit back a watch for once instead of being the big brother and getting everyone killed for no reason.

  5. I agree, the United States should not have interfered with the war. They only made the situation worse and made more people suffer and die.
